Weight Loss - Surgery - Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that aims to eliminate stubborn fat pockets.

Liposuction

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure, sometimes referred to as lipo. It aims to eliminate remaining pockets of fat that you just can’t shift no matter how hard you try through weight loss or exercise. The removal of these stubborn fat areas shouldn’t be seen as an alternative to weight loss. Instead consider this procedure for ‘fine-tuning’, in aid of sculpting the body. There are many areas you can have this procedure performed on, from the chin all the way down to the ankles… Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures globally, often coming second only to female breast surgery.

Getting rid of stubborn areas of fat can be difficult for anyone, in particular if you have lost a lot of weight. Despite individuals best efforts toning and exercising, it’s not often enough to achieve the results you desire.

Liposuction aims to contour the body in the following ways:

  • Eliminating unwanted stubborn fat
  • Defining a more shapely figure by contouring problem areas
  • Aligning the body so it is more in proportion

As a rule, liposuction is performed anywhere on the body at the wishes of the customer, however there are a couple of areas in which it could not be performed due to expert advice of potential complications. The most common places on the body to have liposuction are the lower belly (abdominal), arm and thigh areas, and on the chin. It is best to discuss which areas you would be interested in with your consultant at the earliest stage possible.

Liposuction

Who should consider liposuction?

The ideal candidate shouldn’t have the expectation that all cellulite will be removed through liposuction, their expectations should be realistic. The idea that you would leave hospital without cellulite is not something that would ever be promoted, as it is unrealistic. The ideal candidate would be someone who cannot shift those last few pounds of stubborn fat through exercise or dieting alone. Therefore, the best people for the procedure are those looking to:

  • Remove remaining fat
  • Contour their body profile
  • Find a solution to male gynaecomastia (enlarged male breast area)
  • Boost self-confidence

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery recently released a case study suggesting liposuction to be the most common of all cosmetic surgeries for men and a close second to breast surgery for women. The procedure is increasing in popularity across both genders with more research the procedure is becoming safer.

Despite increased safety over the years, no procedure comes without its risks. If you have underlying health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes, it is likely that doctors may advise you not to undertake this procedure. Even if you are fit and well it is still crucial you are in the best possible health prior to treatment. This mean you should:

  • Stop smoking (the use of nicotine patches is ok)
  • Reach a stable weight which is within 30% of your goal weight
  • Minimise your alcohol intake
  • Be exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy diet

What you should know first

Important information to consider when thinking about liposuction:

If you think liposuction is for you, the next step is to chat to a surgeon at a consultation. In this meeting you will discuss what you’re trying to achieve with the procedure. The expert will then determine whether liposuction is right for you and explain the pros and cons. If both yourself and the professional agree that liposuction is the right treatment for you, you may have to undergo a short diet plan in preparation for the surgery.

At this point you would talk to the expert about any prescription medications you are on. This allows the expert to decide whether it would hinder your treatment in taking these medications in the run up to surgery.

What to expect with liposuction?

Firstly it is important to ensure the doctors practice or surgery is accredited to professional standards and is a safe treatment centre, providing good results. On the day of your liposuction you will return home following the treatment, so someone should be available to take you home as you will not be able to drive.

Prior to the procedure, the treatment area will be marked on your skin which guides the surgeon and is also useful to compare your before-and-after results. You will then be administered either a general or a local anesthesia depending on your procedure type.

What are the benefits of liposuction?

Following your liposuction the benefits include fat cells being permanently removed and your body shaped being slimmed down. However, if weight is put back on following the procedure, the results could be affected. Typically after treatment the results will only get better with time, once your swelling settles down the true results will be revealed. In some cases this can take up to 6 months. During this time the results may fluctuate slightly until the area has completely healed.

Providing you maintain a healthy weight, through a nutritious diet and regular exercise, the results of this treatment are typically long-lasting.
