What is Weight Watchers?

Weight watchers, now known as WW, is one of the most popular choices when it comes to choosing a slimming club in the UK.

Joining a community as vast as weight watchers where you all have a common goal can give you the motivation and support you need to kickstart your weight loss journey, take positive action and to maintain a healthy attitude towards diet and exercise.

Why use a slimming club and not go it alone?

There are many reasons why you might consider joining a slimming club like WW. We’re sure that you will agree that weight loss isn’t always easy, especially on your own, and a slimming club and set diet plan can offer the help you need to achieve your own personal goals.

Whether it is online or in-person, the feeling of being part of a community can give you the motivation to keep going especially when it gets tough. For a lot of people, it is often the structure and routine of being part of a slimming club such as keeping a daily slimming diary can give you much-needed discipline especially on those days when you are struggling to stay on track.

After all, weight loss is a journey with lots of ups and downs and it can be challenging to always feel inspired but the support of others who are in the same position can be hugely motivating.

How does Weight Watchers work?

WW was overhauled in 2015 and is now based on a points-based system called SmartPoints which helps you to make healthier choices and achieve weight loss safely. The way in which it works is that different points are assigned to foods based on their calorie, fat, protein and sugar content.

When you start with weight watchers as a new member, you are given a set amount of daily SmartPoints based on your individual statistics and weight loss goals. Although no foods are specifically restricted, you must stay below the number of daily points in order to effectively lose weight and comply with the programme.

How does the system allow you to lose weight?

Following the weight watchers diet is claimed to result in an average weight loss of around 2lbs a week which is considered to be healthy, realistic and sustainable by the NHS guidelines.

It is also true to say that the WW diet plan also echoes some of the core national health and wellbeing guidelines when it comes to fat loss by maintaining a healthy lifestyle in conjunction with regular physical exercise and keeping as active as possible.

Members may also find the additional support that weight watchers offer, beyond just the diet plan itself and keeping a slimming diary, particularly useful, such as exercise and workout tutorials which can be found online and in the mobile app.

What are the drawbacks of Weight Watchers?

The NHS state some of the disadvantages of the slimming club are working out the points system which can be just as time-consuming as simply counting calories. Some people may also feel pressured into buying weight watchers branded food and drink.

We would always encourage maintaining a positive relationship with food and body-image when losing weight wherever possible to do so. Following a similar diet plan to what the weight watchers programme recommends and closely, or even obsessively, counting calories could lead to unhealthy dieting and eating habits which is not sustainable in the long-term.

Many studies show that short-lived or yo-yo dieting can have a number of implications for your physical and emotional health. It is important to also consider that for many people, the thought of a weekly weigh-in at a weight watchers meeting can be both daunting and a very negative experience especially if they feel uncomfortable with the way they look.

How much does Weight Watchers cost?

The average cost of becoming a weight watchers member in the UK is around £6.25 to attend the weekly in-person meetings or just £2.07 a week for online support and in-app access to a slimming diary and other useful content.
