What are the drawbacks of Slimming World?
As the Slimming World weight loss diet doesn’t give a lot of guidance when it comes to portion size control and calorie-counting especially with the free foods selection, it may be challenging for those of us who require structure, routine and discipline when achieving and maintaining any weight loss.
That being said, the NHS advises that while following the free foods list, you may choose to eat more lean protein foods and starchy carbohydrate foods than recommended, as these are unrestricted, and this would limit any weight loss if you went over your daily calorie requirements.
They also state that syns, which is short for synergy but the similarity to the word “sin” won’t be lost on anyone. Whilst this could be seen as a harmless deterrent for those that struggle with controlling the number of indulgences such as sweets, chocolates and other calorific treats, it may encourage a negative relationship with food.
Is Slimming World safe?
As we’ve discussed, whether we are on a weight loss diet plan or not, we always want to maintain a healthy and positive attitude when it comes to food and our self-image so as a result of this, Slimming World has come under a lot of criticism and negative media attention. It begs the question, should any food be categorically labelled as a sin?
However, taking guidance from The British Dietetic Association advise that the list of low-energy, filling foods can help to promote a healthy, varied and balanced diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables.
They also suggest that members gain an appreciation of which foods are higher in energy and should therefore be limited. This is helpful for long-term healthy eating.
How much does Slimming World cost?
Becoming a member of a Slimming World group costs an initial £10 plus £4.95 to attend the meetings each week. If you would rather have online support only, this starts from £60 for an initial 3-month subscription and includes the latest issue of their magazine.
