The HCG diet is based on the concept of increasing the hormone HCG as a method of weight loss. This diet has been popular for many years and has been named an extreme weight loss method. 

On average individuals lose between 1 and 2 pounds per day on this diet, and supposedly you’re not supposed to feel hungry! Sound too good to be true? There has been several bouts of criticism for this diet over the years but we think it’s worth being educated on every type of diet so you can choose what is most suited to you.

What is the HCG diet?

HCG, short from human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone that is high in the earliest stages of pregnancy and has been used to improve fertility in both men and women. But what has this got to do with weight loss? 

HCG was first identified as a tool which aids weight loss in the mid 1900’s by Albert Simeons. The diet is split into two main components: the low calories intake on a 500 calorie diet and the HCG hormone which in its peak was administered via injections. Now however, HCG can be taken orally, via drops or through sprays as well. In most places HCG is available in stores, over the counter and online.

How does the HCG diet work?

This low-fat, low-calorie diet is divided into 3 main phases in order to maximise weight loss..

  • Loading phase. This stage consists of HCG supplements as well as a high-fat, high-calorie diet for a maximum period of 2 days. This loads your body for the following period.

  • Weight loss phases. In this stage, you will be required to continue taking the HCG, however this is where the dietary changes commence. It is at this stage you will be required to eat 500 calories each day for 3-6 weeks.
  • Maintenance phase. At this point you will be required to stop taking the HCG and gradually increase your calorie intake. However, this requires you to avoid eating any starch or sugar for 3 full weeks. 

 

The duration of the middle ‘weight loss phase’ is dependent on how much weight you have to lose. Someone who only has a little weight to lose would likely only stay in the weight loss phase for 3 weeks. Whereas those seeking a significant amount of lost weight, 6 weeks in the weight loss phase may seem more appropriate. After this it would now be uncommon to repeat the first 2 stages until you have lost your target weight.

During the weight loss phase, you should eat no more than 2 meals. Most meal plans on this diet typically consist of one protein portion, 1 vegetable, 1 piece of bread and fruit. Some other foods can also be considered providing they are only consumed in limited quantities.

Further to this, butter, oil and sugar should be avoided at all costs. Water should be drunk in high volumes and coffee and tea are also encouraged.

How much weight can I lose with the HCG diet?

Then HCG diet can help you lose a significant amount of weight as it boosts your metabolism whilst burning fat. All whilst minimising the times you feel hungry. There are many experts and theories that have attempted to explain the link between HCG and weight loss. It is thought that the HCG hormone works by reducing hunger and increasing metabolism.

However, some experts claim that a similar amount of weight can be lost purely by undertaking the saem low calorie diet. This calorie deficiency is enough on its own to induce a similar amount of weight loss according to these same professionals.

At the end of a 40 day period on the HCG diet, most individuals will lose between 20lbs and 32lbs depending on their start weight and calorie restriction.
