Vitamins and minerals help your body function in the way it should and are essential for staying healthy. Most people can get all the nutrients they need through food and drink but you can often benefit from vitamin supplements too.

Iron is important for the production of red blood cells which carries oxygen around the body. People who are anaemic have a lack of iron and therefore, need to take a supplement.

Vitamin D is produced by the body as a result of the sun but certain foods or vitamin supplements can also be beneficial as it helps with maintaining healthy bones and teeth, and may also protect against type 1 diabetes.

A lack of Magnesium in the diet has a correlation to health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s so it is advised to take a vitamin supplement especially as we get older to help protect us from ill health.

If we have more specific goals in mind especially when it comes to fitness and ways to improve our sports performance we might consider the following vitamins:

Calcium is essential to build and maintain strong and healthy bones. Some studies suggest that calcium, along with vitamin D, may also protect against cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Biotin is growing in popularity amongst the fitness community as it may help speed up the metabolic process and assist with maintaining a healthy weight. It is also a well known beauty vitamin due to its benefits for hair, skin and nails.

Omega 3 fatty acids are a popular vitamin supplement amongst bodybuilders and other fitness enthusiasts. This is because it is proven to increase protein synthesis, which is the process which transforms protein into the fuel your muscles need to grow and remain strong.

If we are on a weight loss journey and are hoping to achieve fat loss, then there are certain vitamins that we take daily in order to help us along the way.

Vitamin B12 and green tea extract are both well known for their metabolism boosting qualities which are attractive for those people who are hoping to lose weight and maintain their fat loss.
