Did you know that sugary and sweet treats don’t have to be the enemy. These types of foods definitely get a bad reputation, but eaten in moderation can be beneficial for some people. If a piece of chocolate makes you happy, then eat that piece of chocolate. As long as you are also eating a well balanced diet and exercising, treating yourself every now and then really is not an issue. 

Who doesn’t love something sweet, I know I do! However, are you attempting to lose weight or attempting to eat less sugary foods? Keep reading to discover recipes to satisfy your sweet tooth with these healthier alternatives. That way you can still enjoy the things you love but in a slightly healthier way. We’re not saying to ditch your favourite cake completely but switch it up every now and again. Switching to healthy alternatives of your favourite sweet treats can have several benefits including; they often have less calories, contain more nutrients and taste fantastic. Sultana, oat and orange cookies

Who says cookies should only be a guilty pleasure? These cookies are super tasty and full of healthy ingredients. Mix the ingredients together and bake in the oven until lightly browned. Then taste and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 100g of butter
  • 50g mashed banana
  • 100g of rolled oats
  • ¼ tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 100g of wholemeal flour
  • 75g sultana
  • 25g of desiccated coconut
  • 100g of soft light brown sugar
  • ½ tsp of grated orange zest
  • 50g chopped walnut
  • 1 tsp of baking powder

What should I eat when I crave sugar?

To help you fight sugar cravings you can try eating; fruit, yoghurt, chia seeds or prunes.

Fruity fondue

This is a perfect sweet treat for sharing with family and friends. Chocolate and fruit is a delicious pairing, dip the fruit into the fondue and indulge in the flavoursome taste. What’s even better is this counts towards your five a day of fruit. So, stop waiting around, put your fruit on kebab sticks and start dipping. 

Ingredients 

  • 100g of milk chocolate
  • 150g of fat free yoghurt, in any flavour you prefer
  • 650g of fruits such as, melon chunks, mango chunks, grapes, pineapple chunks and strawberries

Chia chocolate pudding

Do you like chocolate? Who doesn’t! This chia chocolate pudding is rich and appetizing and makes a fantastic healthy dessert. It’s very simple and only takes around five minutes to make. It’s also gluten free, vegan and low in calories and contains chia seeds which provide omega-3 fats, protein and fibre. What more could you ask for? Just combine all of the ingredients and set in the fridge for a few hours. 

Ingredients 

  • 400ml of hazelnut milk
  • 60g of chia seeds
  • 3 tbsp of cacao powder
  • Mixed cacao nibs
  • ½ tsp of vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp of maple syrup
  • Frozen berries

Cardamom and moroccan orange cake

Did someone say cake? The zest of orange is guaranteed to excite your taste buds and keep you going back for more. This recipe has swapped sugar for an alternative of xylitol, which does not spike your blood sugar levels. Also by swapping oil and butter for a whole pureed orange you can indulge in this delicious and light cake topped with flaked almonds. Serve on its own or accompany the cake with cream or yoghurt for a tasty dessert.

  • 2 oranges
  • 6 crushed seeds of green cardamom pods
  • 1bsp of flaked almonds
  • 2tsp of baking powder
  • 6 large eggs
  • 50g polenta
  • 225g pack of xylitol
  • 200g of ground almonds
  • 25g of self-raising flour
  • Cream or greek yoghurt to serve

Berry and chocolate mousse pot

Chocolate mousse and berries is a match made in heaven. Give this recipe a go and you won’t regret it. Serve this up in glasses or ramekins for an effortlessly luxurious dessert. This recipe contains egg whites, low-fat yoghurt and dark chocolate for a soft, silky mousse full of flavour. Top the mousse on top of your berries of choice and indulge in this sweet treat in less than 20 minutes.

  • 350g of berries of your choice such as blackberries, raspberries, blueberries.
  • 2 tsp of caster sugar
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 75g of 70% grated dark chocolate
  • 4 tbsp of low fat yoghurt
