Workout Food

What is workout food?

Workout food is when you follow a specific meal plan and tailor your eating habits to food and drink choices which will increase your performance and help in achieving the most effective results from your exercise regime.

Why is a balanced diet key?

Whether you have personal fitness goals or not, everybody can benefit from following a balanced diet to ensure that your body gets the proper vitamins, minerals and nutrition that it needs to function well.

The Eatwell guide from the NHS advises that a balanced meal plan should try to eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables everyday, base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta, have some dairy or dairy alternatives, eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein, choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts and at least 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.

Food recommendations before and after a workout

Before a workout you should try to eat a complete meal containing simple carbohydrates, protein and fat around three hours before you start your workout.

After a workout your meal plan should be based around protein and carbohydrates in order to encourage muscle healing and growth. Aim to eat around 30 minutes after you have finished exercising, with a ratio of 3:1 (carbs to protein) in mind for your post-workout food.

Why is important to be properly fulled up before a workout?

Workout fuel is essential because you hit the gym because it will keep you going and increase your sports performance – after all, you can’t have a successful exercise session if you’re running on empty and this can be dangerous for your health too. Be sure to follow recommended nutrition before you workout, with plenty of carbohydrates as this is what will keep your body energised during those harder endurance sessions. Carbs are really effective workout fuel sources due to the efficient way they use and process oxygen, making them an important part of your meal plans if you regularly workout.

Protein meal plans for after your workout

Exercise such as strength training promotes muscle growth, but the body can only build on existing muscles if they recover after your workout. So aim to up your nutrition with protein meal plans after you exercise as this will help the muscles to heal properly and prevents the loss of lean mass which contributes to a muscular appearance and defined & contoured physique.
