Top 10 Fitness Tips and Motivation to Kickstart your Fitness Journey
Fitness Tips & Motivation
We all know exercising is one of the best things you can do for both your physical and your mental health but finding the motivation to exercise when tired after a busy day in work, and especially when something looks good on the tv, can be difficult. And even more so as the wet and colder weather is upon us.
So, let’s take a look at 10 ways to help keep your fitness motivation on track;
Focus on a Single Goal
It can be overwhelming to think about all of the things you should do or need to change, so just pick ONE of those things that is the most important to you at this moment. Narrowing your focus will help you see that your goal can be attained, and it will allow you to approach your fitness journey with confidence rather than fear or discouragement. Feeling like you CAN accomplish something is a big part of feeling motivated to do so!
Keep Your Workouts Short
This works as a great fitness motivation for beginners.
I’m sure the thought of going for a run or a 5 mile walk after doing a full days’ work doesn’t appeal to most people, so the answer is to set your sights shorter.
Doing a 15 to 20 minutes workout is better than nothing on the days when you’re busy or not really in the mood, Plus you can get an intense workout in a shorter timeframe, and knowing the finish line is so closely in sight, should help give you that mental boost to make the effort
In a similar vein, try creating small goals for yourself. If it’s been a while since you’ve worked out, then set a target of 10 star jumps or five push-ups a day. This way, you’ll feel accomplished every time you complete them.
Remember Why You Started
This is a common method, but it is really effective. Sometimes, all it takes to give you that extra push you need is to remind yourself why you started your fitness journey in the first place;
- Was it because you wanted to improve your health?
- Was it because you didn’t feel confident in yourself?
- Was It to lose weight?
Regardless of the reason, it was important enough to get you started in the first place! So, dig deep, think hard, and remember why you decided to make a change.
Create a Workout Schedule
One of the hardest aspects of fitness is finding time to workout when you have a busy schedule. If fitness is something you truly want to prioritise in your life, find a place for it in your daily schedule. It should be as important as work or homework, meaning you don’t cancel it for miscellaneous activities.
Having a set plan of the time you are supposed to workout, and having that time blocked off for working out ONLY, makes it harder for you to make excuses!
Change Your Habits
The Movements made throughout the day as you go about your daily grind is known as ‘incidental exercise’ and will contribute to your fitness over time.
Every step counts towards a fitter lifestyle, so why not consider some of these 5 common incidental exercises?
- Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator
- Walk or cycle to shorter destinations instead of driving
- Park the car further away if you do have to drive
- Do some gardening
- Clean the house
Create a Visual Reminder
This method is something I have done since the very beginning of my fitness journey. I found that physically seeing a reminder of my goals helped me stay motivated and on track through some really tough times.
One good example is your phone background – A great visual tip is to change the wallpaper background on your phone to some fitness motivation quotes. We look at our phones so many times throughout the day so having some sort of motivation on there can really help keep it on our minds! The quotes served as a constant reminder that I was working toward something, and a lot of times when I didn’t want to go to the gym or I wanted to eat poorly, I just took a peek at the quote to remind myself what I wanted to achieve.
Dance Like No One is Watching
If the thought of joining gym doesn’t appeal, then there are plenty of things you can do at home that will get your heart racing and one of those is dancing!
Dancing is not only fun but it’s also a great way to stay in shape.
The level of intensity, how much you move and the steps you take will all contribute to your workout so put on something up-tempo, turn up the volume and dance like no one is watching!
Netflix but Don’t Chill?
How often do you get home from work, plonk yourself on the sofa or get into bed and watch 4-hours of Netflix or the TV without batting an eyelid? I’m sure we’re all guilty of that but what’s to stop you incorporating some exercise into this time?
The answer is ‘nothing!’
Exercises such as star jumps, sit ups, squats, and lunges can all be completed whilst you have both eyes on the TV, plus there’s no need for any equipment and you don’t need a lot of space. It’s recommended that we’re active for at least 30 minutes, 5-days a week, so your daily exercise could be done before one episode of your programme even finishes!
Take Progress Pictures
This can be a great motivator, as a lot of times we don’t realise how far we’ve come until we compare our present selves with our past selves. And that moment of seeing that you have made a physical difference can help kickstart your motivation to continue! Take progress pictures throughout your entire fitness journey and try to take them from similar angles so they’re accurate!
Other Ways to Stay Motivated
Mix Up Your Workouts
Boredom is a huge cause of motivation loss. A simple fix can be to switch up your workouts a bit! Try some new crazy exercises that you found on the internet or try a new way of exercise entirely like swimming, hiking, or even just working out outside! A simple switch up can change your mind set about working out, from something you find boring to something you’re excited to try!
Dress for The Occasion
Okay this one may seem silly, but it actually works!! What better motivation to go to the gym or go out for a run/walk than the fact that you get to look great whilst doing it?! I actually look forward to going to the gym when I have new sports clothes to wear because I know I’ll look good. And when I look good, I feel good and consequently workout super hard! Seems weird…but definitely give it a try.
Find an athletic outfit that you’d be excited to wear while working out, and see if it works for you.
Rewarding yourself along the way is so important for long-term success. Whether this reward comes in the shape of a cheat meal or a new pair of shoes you’ve been wanting, it is necessary for a successful fitness journey! You should be proud of yourself for working toward your goals, and if you acknowledge when you’ve been successful, then you will continue to want to be successful.
Don’t wait for others to reward you for your hard work! Reward yourself! You deserve it!
Hopefully you now have lots of reasons to stay motivated on your fitness journey! Even if you’re just beginning, I hope these tips can help you out along the way. As always, we’d love to hear about your fitness journey in the comments section below.
