Mental Wellbeing - Balance - Physical Activity

Mental wellbeing is best described as your state of mind. It explains how you are feeling and your ability to cope with day-to-day tasks.

Physical Exercise for Mental Wellbeing

What is mental wellbeing?

Mental wellbeing is best described as your state of mind. It explains how you are feeling and your ability to cope with day-to-day tasks. Mental wellbeing is dynamic, meaning from moment to moment it can change, sometimes drastically.

Having healthy mental wellbeing is not described by the absence of a mental disorder. Healthy mental wellbeing describes a state in which you realise your own potential. In addition to this, you should be able to manage normal life even with typical common stressors. You should also be able to productively work and contribute to your community.

How can exercise benefit your mental wellbeing?

It is no secret that exercise benefits your physical wellbeing. Some of the many ways this is possible is through reduced blood pressure and risk of disease. However, the correlation between exercise and your mental wellbeing is becoming an increasingly popular topic. Some of these benefits include improving your mood and sleep quality as well as reducing some symptoms of anxiety and low mood.

It’s even more reassuring to note that science backs this up as well. Studies have found that by exercising 3 times a week or more, your risk of depression is reduced by 30%! Despite these significant benefits, surveys have shown that just over half of adults in the UK meet the recommended physical activity levels of 2.5 hours each week.

What are the main benefits of exercise on your mental health?

There are several key benefits of meeting this weekly 2.5 hour physical activity level. These include: reducing levels of depression and anxiety, reducing stress, increasing self esteem, increasing quality of sleep and even increasing intelligence.

  1. Reducing depression and anxiety levels.

As a significant mood booster, it’s not surprising that symptoms of depression and anxiety can be reduced following exercise. Due to the increase in endorphins, your body is tricking your mind into a state of euphoria. Physical activity is often prescribed as a mood booster prior to medication.

  1. Reducing stress levels.

Reducing stress levels is a sure way to increase happiness and boost your mental wellbeing. Exercising gently pushes your sympathetic nervous systems to communicate and improve your body’s natural response to stress.

  1. Increasing self-esteem.

Whether your self-confidence would be increased through losing a few pounds and toning your muscles, physical activity can boost your mental wellbeing due to your physical appearance. Before you know it, these benefits of your physical appearance can benefit your mind and mood as well.

  1. Improved sleep quality and length.

It’s well known that exercise can help you get a better night’s sleep. Not only does exercise calm your mind via increasing your body temperature, exercise also helps regulate your internal circadian rhythms. This internal body clock lets us know when we feel tired or awake.

  1. Increasing intelligence and cognitive ability.

As a predominantly physical activity, the cognitive benefits of exercise are also extensive. Exercise strengthens your memory and boosts your brain power. This is demonstrated by studies showing that new brain cells are created as a results of cardiovascular exercise.

Types of exercises to boost your wellbeing

There are many types of exercise which can boost your mental wellbeing, but this doesn’t always mean going hell for leather at the gym. There are several ways to boost your mind as a result of moving your body.

Here at Wellbeing 365, we have whittled this down to the top 5 types of exercise which can improve your mental wellbeing. These include: running (or walking), boxing, pilates, yoga or spin classes.

  1. Running (or walking)

Running provides a ‘high’ which kick starts your motivation to exercise. It sounds simple but putting one foot in front of the other should not be underestimated. In addition to the mood boost from being active, being outdoors is also particularly beneficial. This is why running or walking comes at the top of our exercise list.

  1. Boxing

Boxing allows a safe release of stress or anger. It provides an outlet that aggression or anxieties can be channelled through. In addition to this, completely a boxing workout as part of a daily exercise practice will release endorphins.

  1. Pilates

Traditionally, pilates is aimed at those looking to improve core strength. However, this aspect of ‘controlology’, being the practice of controlling the body with the mind, should not be overlooked. Many people battling with anxiety often find pilates extremely useful in gaining back some control.

  1. Yoga

Yoga contains the fundamental belief that our yin and yang must be in balance, in turn we look to create a holistic balance of these two elements through this practice. By integrating the body and the mind through yoga, you will be better placed to improve your mental wellbeing.

  1. Spin classes

These types of exercise classes are like no other! Fun and engaging spin classes are a great environment to burn off anxiety and bring the rider into the present moment. This ensures the emotional and mental wellbeing of participants is increased.
