Spiritual development may mean different things to different people, depending on what they want to achieve from it. To some spiritual development is believing in something more, beyond the universe and to create more awareness of what is going on around them.

When people grow spiritually, their perceptions may change. Some begin to view the world around them differently and begin to view things more clearly. By developing spiritually it is then when we begin to see more positive changes happen within our lives. This helps us to become more optimistic in relation to our present lives and our future. As well as allowing us to become calmer and more peaceful.

Reflections on life typically occur when we do this and we often search for a deeper meaning in life as we see through the more superficial things. Therefore, we crave meaning and start questioning all that we do and our purpose. 

Dealing with negative energy around us becomes easier and we begin to control more difficult emotions such as; sadness and anger, allowing people to look positively on life. Other benefits include;

How to begin your spiritual journey

There are several ways you can start your own spiritual journey. A lot of people feel as though they have to go into solitude however, that is not always the case. You don’t have to go to some remote island or suddenly have to change everything about yourself. You can start your journey from your own home and you do not necessarily have to adapt much as real change starts from within. 

Travel: it’s true, travelling helps you find yourself. Making time to travel, going to a comforting place, somewhere new, for a short time or long time, really can do wonders. You will gain a better connection with your own self and it may help limit distractions and you can then reflect on everything. Travelling allows you to limit and forget about stressors, leading to increased wellness. Activities on your holiday could include;

  • Meditation
  • Exercising
  • Talking to advisors or counsellors
  • Vow of silence 

Meditate: Managing your daily tasks and time can be difficult, so it is important to set aside time to connect with yourself. Whether this be in the morning as soon as you wake up, before you go to bed or on your work break, take around 10 minutes every day to meditate. Fitting relaxation and meditation into your lifestyle can free your own mind as well as fostering a strong relationship with spiritual wellness.

Explore: through exploring your own spiritual core, you will simply ask questions about yourself and your own meaning. Questions you could ask yourself include;

  • What do I value most?
  • What’s my purpose?
  • Who am I?

Answering such questions will allow you to think deeply about yourself as well as notice things you may have not noticed before that can help you reach fulfillment. 

Yoga: this is a physical workout that assists you in improving spiritual wellness, it helps to reduce physical and emotional strains on your body and mind. Yoga can be taught at different levels and helps to reduce insomnia, fatigue, depression and anxiety as well as lower blood pressure, boost your immune system and reduce stress levels. 

Think positively: when you start to view life in a positive manner, you will think differently, become refocused and be in a healthier and happier place. Eliminating negativity and reframing how you deal with certain situations will make you feel more relaxed. 

Let out your thoughts: expressing yourself and getting all of your thoughts out can help you refocus your mind. It can sometimes be difficult to comprehend what is going on in our heads. So it can be beneficial to write it out on paper, then you can clearly see your thoughts and will allow you to think more clearly and decide on the steps forward to take.
