Mindfulness is a relatively straightforward concept. There is no need to over complicate being fully immersed in what you’re doing, what is happening around you and how you feel.

What is mindfulness? 

Mindfulness defines the ability for a person to be completely aware of what they are doing and where they are. It also suggests that the person is not overwhelmed by the activities going on around them. Mindfulness is not something you have to learn to do, the skill is learning how to access this state of mind. 

Whilst mindfulness is a state of mind, there are several techniques which can induce this feeling. In essence, mindfulness is made up of short pauses in your everyday life to just observe. By being mindful in this way, you will invoke feelings of gratitude and awareness. This ability also ensures that you can reduce stress.

How does mindfulness work? 

This practice works on the basis of being able to bring your attention into the present moment, this is often aided by focusing on your breathing or body. This is because the way we think and feel can determine how we act, therefore inflicting negative emotions on ourselves from past events. By keeping our thoughts in the present we can avoid this and instead invoke positive emotions.

Mindfulness works by the ability to notice thoughts rather than feel emotional about them. In time you can learn that thoughts don’t define you as a person and are disposable if not beneficial to your life. It is also important to recognise what your body is telling you. This often surfaces physiologically, for example increased heart rate or quickened breathing. By identifying your thoughts you can create space between them and yourself allowing a less emotional reaction.

In addition to this, research has also shown that mindfulness can ‘decrease patterns of negative thinking behaviour’ and reduce anxiety as you are more aware of your thoughts

Secondly, mindfulness has been proven to reduce emotional reactivity. Because you are more aware of your thoughts, it is easier to detach them from your emotions so a more rational reaction is provided. Mindfulness can also improve your attention, awareness and emotions as a whole. As your reactions are less emotional, it is likely you will also experience a reduction in stress and a more positive state of mind.

Finally, mindfulness is also beneficial in managing physical pain. Research has repeatedly demonstrated that patients with chronic pain are more able to improve their quality of life through mindfulness.

Due to the holistic perspective of this topic it is important to remain grounded in it’s approach. There are several things which are worth knowing about mindfulness, which we have listed below:

  • Mindfulness is not obscure. We are only practicing awareness of daily activities we would be carrying out regardless. 
  • Mindfulness is not an additional practice. We are built to be aware of the present therefore we do not have to change who we are, only to recognise what is happening around us.
  • Mindfulness does not require change. This practice is an observation rather than an activity to change who we are.
  • Mindfulness can be transformative. Anyone can be mindful, therefore it can benefit the lives of whoever chooses to practice it.
  • Mindfulness is a lifestyle. This is a constant change of thought pattern, continuously occurring. 
  • Mindfulness is backed by evidence. Practicing mindfulness is not a leap of faith, there is both scientific and experimental evidence that demonstrates its benefits.

  1. Be mindful during routine activities. By bringing awareness to activities like washing up or brushing your teeth, you will experience these activities with all of the senses.

  3. Be mindful whilst waiting. In our fast paced lives it is easy to become frustrated when waiting in a queue or when you’re in traffic. However, this is a great opportunity to pause and bring your attention to your breathing.
