Personal Development

What is personal development?

Personal development lasts a lifetime. It is how people assess their qualities and skills, consider what their aims are, set goals and understand and maximise their own potential. To develop personally, individuals can perform activities that can develop their capabilities, enhance life quality, realise aspirations and dreams, facilitate employability and build human potential and capital.

What are the benefits of personal development?

There are several benefits of personal development including;

Self awareness: this is often the first step to personal development as you begin to understand who you are along with your beliefs, values and what you want to do in your life to reach pure happiness. Following another person’s dream won’t help that, so you have to be self aware and design a life that suits you and effectively reach for your dreams.

Motivation: having a clear path, can you help become more motivated and help you reach your goals. This leads you to become extra productive and realise your weaknesses and strengths. When working towards a new path, self motivation is crucial. This allows you to get your work done to a decent standard. Along with being resilient during difficult times and having the final goal in your sight.

What can I do to boost personal development in my life?

Here are a few things that you can do within your daily life to help to improve you with your personal development.

Get a mentor: this could be anyone from a friend who knows something that you don’t know, that you are wanting to learn to an experienced coach such as a personal trainer or self help coach who are very experienced. Mentorship is probably the best way to improve quickly.

Read: are you wanting to learn about a certain topic? Are you wanting to find peace? Do you want to become more confident? Outgoing? Spontaneous? Productive? Then reading can be a great way to do so, most topics are covered in books and you can study them, this can be a therapeutic and efficient way to develop.

Create an effective routine: your habits shape you and if you have positive habits then can set you on the path to success. However, if you have negative habits, this may hold you back. It will be difficult to act a certain way and expect your life to be different if you keep doing the same things over and over. You have to create positive habits in order to make a change, to begin with this could be as simple as making your bed or drinking enough water.

Reflect everyday: if you are serious about self development, you need to constantly be aware of and think about how you can make a positive difference. The best way to do this is by reflecting yourself and asking how and what needs to be worked on.

Be honest: if you are kidding yourself you’re never going to change are you? This may be difficult as everyone wants results straight away but patience is key and it’s best just to be honest with yourself. We know it’s easier to buy a book on self-development and to say you’re working on it rather than actually reading it, but that’s not how it works im afraid. Honesty is key and you will find yourself in a better position for it.

Train and work on yourself with others: you don’t have to do it alone, finding people on the same journey as you can really help to keep you motivated and reach your goals quicker.

Measure progress: measuring your progress can be a great way to see how far along you’ve come. This could be progress pictures, measurements or simply taking notes. Looking back on these in the future will really give you a boost and keep you motivated to drive forward.

Role models: finding role models who are aspirational and who you can look up to can be helpful to keep you on track and move with you through your journey. They may also act as simple daily reminders to keep going.

Consistency is crucial: we all know that change does not exactly happen overnight and it can be a slow process. However, consistency is what causes true and meaningful change. This can be a challenge but you always need to keep your end goal in mind and remember that the more consistent you are the closer you are to that goal. Self development is a lifestyle and daily practice.
