Being a gym newbie is often daunting. After signing up most people find the weights room most intimidating and therefore stay clear and use the larger machines instead. Whilst this type of equipment can benefit your workout, the nerves of heading into the weights room is unnecessary and can hugely improve your workout.

With the right techniques and equipment, even novices are able to feel the benefits of free weights. However, before you get going, it is important to understand the basics of this equipment along with the pros and cons of each weight. To help you along your way, we have detailed the main types of weights and our opinions on each below. The main types of free weights are dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells and plates, EZ bar and sandbags.

Bench press

When you enter any gym across the world, no matter the location, clientele or size, you are likely to notice one thing that they all provide and that will be a bench press and barbell there for someone to begin bench pressing. There’s no surprise bench pressing is very popular. When you have mastered the movement, you will start to see great progress and notice your strength, as well as muscle gains in your triceps, chest and front shoulders.

Before using the bench press you may want to practice the movement using dumbbells to begin with to ensure you have the upper body strength in your triceps, shoulders and chest. You could even practice with just an empty bar. In most gyms the barbell will weigh 20kg, if this sounds too heavy, you may need a bit more experience with weight training, why not try to master push ups to build up your strength. 

Below are some tips on how to improve your bench press;

  • Get the right grip: grip the bar with your hands positioned so that your forearms will be parallel as the bar comes to your chest. As your elbows pass your sides your wrists need to be over them.

Leg press

Another popular piece of equipment is the leg press, this can help you build crucial leg muscles. There are different types of machines for leg press including the 45 degree angle leg press and the horizontal one.

Both of these machines develop the hamstrings, calves and quadriceps of the gluteus and thigh. It may be a straightforward exercise but it is important to know how to use the machines properly. Focusing on your form will help you increase the benefits and boost strength, as well as prevent injury. This can be used as part of a circuit workout for strengthening leg routine. 

By moving the position of your foot you can target different muscles. It can help build strength and overcome imbalances like runners who have stronger hamstrings compared to quadriceps. 

Smith machine

If you are wanting to boost muscle size, a smith machine can assist with this. The bar will only move up and down, so it is great for fatiguing muscle groups from the same angle. There are several exercises you can do on this machine including;

  • Squats
  • Bent over row
  • Bench press
  • deadlifts

Assisted pull up machine

Have you attempted to do pullups but havet quite mastered it yet? Well, the use of an assisted pull up machine may be the one for you. Doing assisted pull ups help to tighten and strengthen your back muscles and core from under your arm all the way to your hips. The weight on the machine can be adjusted so you can gradually reduce the weight and work towards unassisted pull ups. 

Lat station

Lat machines are very versatile allowing you to perform different exercises such as;

  • Ab crunches
  • Push downs
  • Arm curls
  • Seated rows
  • Lat pull downs

You can adjust the weight for precise training, it is also ideal for home gyms. When using this machine you will mostly be targeting the lats, back and upper body muscles. There are many benefits of this; you can directly target specific muscles by isolating them, improving posture and you can strengthen your back without tiring out triceps or biceps.
