The benefits of bodybuilding

Bodybuilding is largely about physique but it’s benefits don’t end there. This traditional sport is also about your general health. This activity would be particularly suited to you if you want to gain benefits from both a health perspective and a cardiovascular perspective. Bodybuilding has many benefits, such as…

Your body still burns calories after your workout

With bodybuilding, your body is still burning calories for a further 36 hours after your workout finishes! This can be attributed to your boosted metabolism from this type of exercise, which means that even when your workout is over, the effects of the training last more than a day and a half.

Your body will be able to boost your lean muscle mass

Not only does this type of workout boost your metabolism, but as the name suggests it also shapes your body in specific focus areas. Where cardio exercises promote a higher level of weight loss, this loss can often be seen from a combination of fat and muscle, that’s why bodybuilding is more suited to those looking to tone their muscles as opposed to losing weight on them.

Your bone health will improve

Living a sedentary life has been significantly proven to reduce bone health. But we have a fix for this… bodybuilding helps increase bone density due to the mechanical loading aspect of this workout. In addition to this, bodybuilding specifically has been shown to display this benefit the most in direct comparison to cardio workouts.

Your heart health will improve

Scientific research in this area has shown that the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and other major issues has been significantly lowered when bodybuilding or weight training has been completed at least three times per week.

Best bodybuilding workouts

After reading through the main benefits of bodybuilding, it’s probable that you want to know where to start! Whether you’re a complete novice or a bodybuilding enthusiast, there are 4 main workouts to consider when completing your resistance workouts.

We have detailed the top 4 bodybuilding workouts below. The main exercises include the 5 x 5 program, German volume training, the FST-7 training program and upper/lower split training.

  1. The 5 x 5 program. This popular workout program allows you to gain a high amount of strength from increased muscle mass. The exercise is based off 5 sets of 5 repetitions focusing on the three main muscle groups over your full body during the workout.
  2. German volume training. Similar to the previous 5 x 5 program in that 5 sets is common, however, with this slightly more intense training program, there are 10 reps as opposed to 5. Additionally, this workout aims to focus on two muscle groups during each workout.
  3. The FST-7 training program. It sounds more complex than it is… in short, this workout stands for fascial stretch training which like it says on the tin aims to stretch the fascia tissue. This is the soft connective tissue around your muscles. This helps build your muscle’s structural integrity as well as acting as a stronger shock absorber when performing these exercises.
  4. Upper/lower split training. This training program is aimed to workout each muscle group twice a week individually in order to maximise each workout area. Aiming for a two on, one off schedule should allow you to follow this program effectively.
