What is diving in the sea?

Do you dream of discovering what lies below the surface of the vast blue ocean? With scuba diving you can do just that! Scuba diving is basically swimming underwater with breathing apparatus, it allows divers to explore at great depths. The breathing apparatus allows them to stay underwater for a long period of time without coming back about the water to get air. This activity is recreationally enjoyed for exploring underwater caves, shipwrecks and getting close to underwater animals like fish within their natural habitat. As well as this being a hobby for some people, it is also others’ profession such as underwater welding, military diving operations and offshore construction. 

What is the difference between snorkelling, deep sea diving and scuba diving?

Scuba diving, snorkelling and deep sea diving are all very popular water activities, which allow divers to discover and admire marine life, fish, coral and much more. However, each of these activities are different. I have already touched on what scuba diving is, continue reading to find out more. Deep sea diving requires extensive training which allows divers to dive deeper than 40 metres with the right equipment, they can explore more of the ocean. This is a great option for people who want to discover as much of the ocean as possible but it’s important to note it can be challenging and takes a lot of bravery however, the sights can be fascinating.

What Is Scuba Diving?

Scuba diving is swimming underwater in the sea with a breathing apparatus, allowing you do discover the marine/sea life.

What Are The Benefits Of Scuba Diving?

Scuba diving is an excellent all body activity as it reduces stress, boosts confidence, improves strength and lowers blood pressure.

Do I need to train to scuba diving?

Yes, you will need to have some training to learn how to use the safety equipment and any precautions. 

What scuba diving equipment do I need?

Before you can start scuba diving you will need; a dive mask, swim fins, pressurised gas tank, wetsuit, scuba regulator.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From Swimming?

In general, it will take you four to six weeks of consistent swimming to see results. Also the better you eat the better the results.

Snorkelling is a beginner’s underwater activity as it involves exploring the ocean from the surface of the water using a breathing tube and snorkel mask. You are able to observe some of the wonders of the ocean near the surface such as, tropical fish, coral and vibrant reefs. Often, people do this as a fun recreational sport whilst on holiday, it does not require any training. 

Therefore, the main difference between all of these activities is the depths you can go with them and how much of the ocean you can actually explore. A snorkeler is able to enjoy the colourful marine life from the surface of the water. A scuba diver has the opportunity to delve a bit deeper and stay below water level for a longer amount of time. Whereas, deep sea divers can explore even further and they need extensive training to do so. 

What are the benefits of underwater diving?

There are several benefits of scuba diving including;

  • This is a great aerobic activity which helps to improve your breathing techniques. It can be particularly beneficial for people who have asthma.
  • Reduces stress: this activity is amazing for stress relief, the combination of the ocean water and exploration of marine life is sure to make anyone forget about their troubles for a while. 
  • Below the water surface there are wondrous sights to be seen, whilst scuba diving you get to see the world from a new perspective. A huge benefit is getting to witness beautiful sea life like schools of fish or colorful coral. 
  • You can become more aware of your surroundings and boost concentration levels. Being immersed into a new environment, you will become more focused and conscious of what is around you, whilst also paying attention to your balance and swimming technique. 
  • Lowers blood pressure: according to several studies, regular divers are less prone to heart attacks and strokes.
  • Build lasting friendships, a great benefit of scuba diving is meeting like minded people who you can go on underwater adventures with. A feeling of community, empowerment and excitement will be promoted. 
  • Boost self esteem and confidence: scuba diving is a completely unique experience, you are immersed into a new world under the water, being involved in this new adventure helps you learn new skills and see new things, boosting your confidence.
  • Increase muscle flexibility and strength: diving is so exhilarating so you may not think it but it is a real workout, you use several muscle groups to swim through the resistance of the water. 
  • Have you ever dreamt of feeling free and weightless? Deep under the ocean, the water holds your weight as you explore the depths of the ocean.
  • Sun and sea are a brilliant combination, whilst scuba diving you will feel happier in the sun as well as absorbing more vitamin D from it, which is essential for bone health. In addition, the salt water promotes good skin health as it improves its elasticity and outer appearance. 

Things to know before underwater diving

Before you start scuba diving you will need to have some training. This is because you are required to stay under the water for longer periods of time and it can be dangerous if not done correctly. So, safety procedures should be followed at all times. Scuba divers are also required to learn how to use breathing equipment properly. 

Furthermore, specific equipment is needed before anyone can scuba dive this includes; 

  • wetsuit/drysuit
  • Dive mask
  • Swim fins
  • Pressurised gas tank
  • Scuba regulator
