So, you have decided to start swimming as a sport or for leisurely exercise, but either way you need to buy a swimming costume and are unsure on where to start. This is because swim suits can range from a knee length one piece to a bikini. To make this process slightly easier, we have listed the main types of swimming costumes and their features so you’re able to make a better decision. 

The main types of swimming costumes are: competition kneeskins, boyleg swimsuits, longer length swimsuits, standard length one pieces, tummy control swimwear, tankinis and two pieces.

Competition kneeskins

Chances are you are not a competitive swimmer if you’re browsing these pages, however, it is important to bear in mind the benefits of a racing swimsuit for performance or you are aspiring to reach a competitive level. These types of costumes are supposed to feel like a second skin or paper-thin however, they are not durable, therefore will only last a few races.

Boyleg swimsuits

If you’re a lady after a little more leg coverage without wearing a full length bathing suit a boyleg swimming costume could be suited to you. This suit gives a sporty look whilst having additional support in the bust and leg area making it ideally suited for swimming.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From Swimming?

In general, it will take you four to six weeks of consistent swimming to see results. Also the better you eat the better the results.

Longer length swimsuits

Many women are not aware of longer length swimsuits, or indeed they are and have simply not considered one for themselves. If you feel like your classic swimsuit pulls down on your chest, this type of costume could be the answer. Typically, this suit is 3.5cm longer than a regular swimming costume.

Standard length one piece

A traditional swimming costume would come under this category and although called a ‘standard’ one piece, it still comes in many different styles and shapes. One feature which is commonly sought after in this type of swimsuit is chlorine resistance. This means the costume will last longer particularly if you’re swimming multiple times per week. 

If you need an increased level of flexibility in your costume, particularly if you’re swimming a large amount of laps, it is a good idea to invest in something that has thinner straps or an open back to allow increased movement in your shoulders.

Tummy control swimwear

For some swimmers, particularly those participating for fun or leisure purposes it is not as important how your swimming costume is shaped, but it is important how it feels and if you’re comfortable. If you have a larger bust, then support in this area may be preferable. Alternatively you may want support for your tummy area which makes it appear as though you have a slimmer profile in order to help you feel more confident.

Tankinis and two pieces

We have discussed one piece swimsuits in depth, but what about two piece suits. For some ladies a tankini is the perfect combination between comfortable and covering. Additionally, two piece sports bikinis can be comfortable when swimming for fitness in addition to being an easy cross over to take to the beach. 

From this in depth comparison, you can see that there are many different types of swimwear which are suitable for any type of swimming. Ensure you pick something that is both comfortable and durable then you will be more confident when swimming at the pool.
