There is something about dancing around to your favourite music, whether this be in your kitchen or a dance studio that seems to make all your worries fly away. It could be the rhythm of the music or the upbeat workout that gets you up and moving. Or maybe it’s the joy of learning and mastering new moves that gets you wanting to just never stop dancing. No matter what your reason may be, there are so many benefits of dancing, emotionally, physically and mentally. So get up and put those dancing shoes on.

There are several forms of dancing from disco to ballet to tap to barn. It has always been a big part of humans and culture, celebrations and rituals. Today, dancing is mostly about self-expression and recreation as well as it being a competitive sport. It’s also a great way for people to stay active. 

What are the benefits of dancing? 

No matter what age you are, size or shape, dancing is a great way to stay active and fit. Moving yourself to the beats of music can positively change your life. It has so many benefits for both physical and mental health including;

Physical

Dance is a cardio exercise, however, when you’re dancing it often doesn’t feel like exercise because it feels so good, so this is a win win. 

  • Boosts cardiovascular health: adults are guided to exercise for around 150 minutes each week. Your heart rate will rise and you can burn a lot of calories. 
  • Improves strength and balance: dance is a fantastic form of exercise as you move your body in all directions, depending on the type of dance that you are doing it will also use different muscles. For example, say you are doing plies in ballet, your legs will need to be engaged as the movement focuses on leg muscles. Often movements we do in our normal life such as walking only occur on one level however, dancing includes rotational and lateral movement. This also increases balance which is so important in dance to smoothly move from positions.

  • Easy on your body: several dancing forms like ballroom are suitable for people with chronic issues or limited mobility. If you are just dancing in your house, making it up as you go along or watching a tutorial on YouTube then you can adapt the moves to suit your needs. All moves are bodyweight exercises so unlike going to the gym, you don’t need to use any more weights.

Mental benefits

  • Increased cognitive performance: as you age, dancing has been said to boost your thinking ability. When dancing and performing routines, this takes a lot of skill and memory and if you continue this when you get older it may help to improve areas of your brain that you may not tap into without dancing. 
  • Your brain gets challenged: have you ever tried tap dancing? If so then you’ll understand how it challenges your brain, doing those timesteps has your brain concentrating on the steps, especially when it’s new to you. You will have to recall patterns, moves and changing movement all at the same time. No matter how old you are, this is an excellent mental exercise as well as physical.

  • An amazing thing about dancing is that everyone can do it, no matter age, shape, strength or ability, you could even dance sitting down. Have you ever been to a concert and seen the whole crowd dancing? Everyone seems so happy and it forms a sense of togetherness. 
  • Social: you may prefer dancing around when you’re on your own but it’s also fantastic to dance with others. Whether that’s family or friends or in a dance fitness class, it’s so good for your social well being.

What different types of dance are there?

There are several dance styles to try so there is something that everyone will enjoy. Popular dance styles include;

  • Tap dancing: this focuses largely on beats and timing. The name comes from the tapping sounds that are made when you tap the small metal plates from your shoes on the floor. 
  • Ballet: this is often performed with classical music and focuses on flexibility, technique and strength. 
  • Jazz: this is usually a very high energy dance style that involves, turn, leaps and kicks to the music beat. 
  • Ballroom: tango, rumba, foxtrot, the walz are all styles that can be done with a partner.
  • Hip-hop: this is an urban style which involves freestyling, breaking and locking.
