A bootcamp is a type of group training programme!

Bootcamps

What is a bootcamp?

A bootcamp is a type of group training programme that may be accessed through a gym, personal trainers or in other groups. They are specifically designed to build core strength and physical fitness through different types of high-intensity exercise to give a full body workout.

The activities and disciplined style of teaching are sometimes based on aspects of fitness training often used in the military and the trainers themselves may sometimes be former members of the armed forces, but this isn’t always the case and they can take a number of different formats.

Types of exercise bootcamps

There are different types of bootcamps available in the UK. But what they all tend to have in common is that they are usually in a group, outdoors and both a physical and mental challenge of strength – putting your endurance to the test!

More often than not, they are based on a military style of fitness with sessions organised by fitness instructors in open spaces for around 20 people at any one time.

Sessions usually last for around an hour and are made up of a combination of typical cardiovascular activity, weight lifting as well as stretching and a warm-up and cool-down at the beginning and end of each session. All bootcamps have the aim of giving you a full body workout and you should hopefully leave feeling a real sense of achievement and motivated to keep going with your individual fitness goals, whatever they might be.

The large majority of bootcamps take place in the early morning or early evening, before and after work, which can be popular with those who work in an office and therefore, can still fit sessions around their working day. All in all, you should expect to work incredibly hard, burn a lot of calories and feel amazing afterwards.

What are some other exercise programs?

Bootcamps for weight loss can include exercise programs like Tough Mudder which is a popular choice in the UK when it comes to high-intensity fitness. It is a physical endurance event in which you attempt 10 to 12-mile-long obstacle courses, which often play on common fears, such as fire, water, electricity and heights. It’s certainly not for the faint-hearted and often requires significant preparation in the months beforehand, to ensure you are at an optimum level of fitness.

It’s worth noting that these types of bootcamps are more suitable for those people who are already physically fit and wouldn’t suit the needs of someone who is just at the beginning of their weight loss journey.

However, there are bootcamps available that specifically tailor to the needs of people who are either overweight or obese and are hoping to achieve substantial weight loss. These styles of weight loss programmes can sometimes be residential and can take place over a number of weeks. This can also include access to specialist dietitians, nutritionists and personal trainers along with counselling support in order to take an integrated and more of a lifestyle approach to reaching a healthier weight and changing your overall lifestyle in the long-term.

There are also bootcamps available to children and young people. So whatever your personal fitness goals might be, there is sure to be a bootcamp suitable for you.

Look through local magazines, community groups on social media or enquire at your gym about sessions that are available in your area. Due to the popularity of bootcamp training, we would always recommend that you book the sessions you want to attend in advance to secure your place in the group.

Bootcamps from home

The demanding military style of the most popular bootcamp sessions aren’t for everyone and might not suit your needs and personal weight loss objectives. Consider trying bootcamps from home, after all, there are so many different forms of exercise that you can do from the comfort of home.

Whether that is following an exercise bootcamp through an app or on YouTube, or doing a bootcamp style DVD in your living room. The options are endless, and not to mention, low cost too.

Don’t forget that housework counts as exercise too! You can actually burn a lot of calories through doing daily tasks such as making the bed, doing the laundry, mopping the floor and hoovering up. Why not put together your own high-intensity housework bootcamp? It’s free and you can exercise anytime and on your own terms.
