What is boxing? 

Boxing is one of the oldest and simplest sports. It typically describes two people fighting with their fists. It is a dual that has hundreds of years of history. This sport should not be viewed as a ‘brawl’ or ‘street fight’ as there are a series of rules and regulations that must be followed when competing. Such rules vary between levels of skill in this sport. 

Boxing doesn’t have to be a competitive sport however. Many gyms now offer boxing classes which contain a level of pleasure you just can’t achieve through normal circuits and cardio workouts. If you intend on being more than good at anything it must excite you to a degree, otherwise you will find yourself losing interest and the task in hand becoming a chore.

When you put a pair of boxing gloves on for the first time, you will see why nowadays so many athletes are drawn to boxing. It is a sport of stamina and skill and perfect for anyone who enjoys a challenge.

Aside from the fact boxing provides you with a fun workout as opposed to a boring fitness routine, there are several other benefits you will gain when taking up boxing as part of your exercise routine. These include: cardio fitness; improved coordination and improved self-defence and confidence.

Firstly, the basics of boxing are cardiovascular. You get the opportunity to work your heart and lungs to a level of fitness unparalleled to other workouts. Boxing provides a range of intensities depending on the type of exercise you’re doing. With a combination of basic drills and HIIT on the bags you can strike up a perfect balance.

On average if you start regularly training three to four times a week, you should have a solid grass of boxing in about 6 months.

Boxing training is great for overall fitness. Like any cardio exercise it gets you heart pumping & helps to lower high blood pressure & heart disease risk.

Does Boxing Tone Your Body?

Boxing is very good at quickly helping you tone up your body and build strong, healthy muscles.

Improved coordination.

This type of exercise is more about coordination and balance than it is about strength. It is not possible to be good at boxing if you do not gain unbeatable coordination and balance. In this sport, your entire body has to work as one to perfect each technique and work efficiently. 

Once you have attended regular boxing training sessions, you may also find other aspects of your life become naturally more graceful as a result as well.

Improved self-defence and confidence.

Whilst fighting outside of the ring should never be seen as a good thing, most people find it useful to have some level of self-defence in case the inevitable occurs. Boxing provides you with confidence in this aspect to apply defence techniques if necessary. We have listed our top 3 boxing workouts for you to try next time you hit the gym. These are sparring, mitts and a double-ended bag.

  • Sparring. The essence of this workout is to mimic fighting conditions. Believe it or not, sparring is actually more difficult than other training methods in boxing. And after the excitement of trading punches calms down, you can work each and every muscle in your body to resist the moves of your opponent. In this training exercise you must think on your feet.

  • Mitts. This drill is one of the best in learning nex boxing techniques. In a similar way to sparring, this method improves your offense and defense at the same time. However, the key benefit here is instant feedback on your technique from your trainer. By hitting mitts you will improve your techniques optimally as well as gaining a cardio workout.

  • Double-ended bag. Our personal favourite involves a mix of a speed and heavy bag. The key here is to hit the bag as hard as you like but with precision. This challenging technique is something to try after you have advanced slightly in boxing as it develops your skills to a higher level.
